McLaren W1 and the problem of using 1,275 PS

From the archive. Prices, availability and references describe the original publication date.

The W1 has 1,275 PS and sends it through the rear wheels. The first question that raises is how early a driver can actually use the throttle. Power that arrives predictably as you unwind the steering is worth more than a big number that only comes into play once the car is straight.

The W1 follows the F1 and P1, and its V8 hybrid system takes the recipe into another league of complexity. It also has to deal with the ordinary problems of a quick car: cold tyres, a damp patch on corner exit and a driver who may only take it to a circuit once or twice a year.

That’s familiar territory to anyone who has driven a much less powerful car in the wet. The numbers are extraordinary. The need to feel what the rear tyres are doing is the same.
